A change from previous years is that the ham operators will not have to collect the runners' bib numbers and times.  The aid station volunteers will be responsible for collecting the information and handing it to the ham operators, who will transmit the information to net control.  

Sites that do not have cell service will transmit the information by voice to net control.  Sites that have cell service will use laptop computers and mobile hotspots to transmit the data via the Runner Track program.  A one hour training session on the use of the Runner Track program will be held in Big Bear on Saturday, August 10 at noon.  Contact John Emig, johndemig@gmail.com for details.

Hello Russ:

Thanks again for all your help at last year's Kodiak races.

I am writing to bring you up to speed on the 2019 event and a bunch of changes, and to ask if you will be able to help again.

Probably the biggest change will affect all of the aid stations – the 100 mile race will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16. Yep, 6 p.m.

John Minger has asked if you will be returning. He was especially appreciative of your help at Sugarloaf, as am I. And look for some big changes at the Sugarloaf aid stations this year.

There will be a complete redesign of the Sugarloaf-1 and -2 aid stations. Hams will be moved away from the confusion of the aid station. Outbound 100-mile and 50-mile runners en route to Sugarloaf Peak will be recorded on RunnerTrack, but not the outbound 50K runners (we will know who they are already). When the runners come back from the Peak the hams will record them all (100 mile, 50 mile and 50K) as Sugarloaf-2. I have attached a map of the new look for the Sugarloaf aid stations.

And, I have attached the Personnel Assignments sheet that will give you an idea of how the later start affects the entire race.

Below are some of the other changes:

1) The race will once again go clockwise.

2) There is no Prize Purse race this year - there will be three races: 100 mile (starts in the Village, 50 mile (starts at 4 a.m. in Holcomb Valley), and 50K (starts at 6 a.m.at Sugarloaf-1 aid station).

3) The Skyline-2 aid station has moved a mile down the hill and is now where Clubview Drive ends and 2N10 begins - and it's now called SkyFern.

4) Bear Mountain aid station is no more. SkyFern is replacing both Bear Mountain and Skyline-2.

5) The Dump aid station will remain at the same location but will now be called Cushenbury. (It's at the top of Cushenbury Grade.)

6) I am planning on establishing a roving "strike team" that will assist aid stations that are impacted by large numbers of runners. I'm thinking Grandview-1 (and maybe Grandview-2), Cushenbury, Burns Canyon, and Sugarloaf-2.

7) I am planning several RunnerTrack information sessions in the weeks leading up to the race. For the session in Big Bear, the race will provide lodging. More information later.

8) Once again, there will be bedrooms and facilities in the Net Control house.
