ARES - Amateur Radio Emergency Services
Members of Land Ops who are also members of the ARRL probably know that we reside in the Orange Section of the Amateur Radio Emergency Services. For those who don't know, ARES is the Amateur Radio Emergency Services arm of the ARRL.
ARES provides volunteer emergency radio services to local agencies and groups, including special events, such as bike and running races, community fireworks events, and for emergencies that occur. For example, the local ARES groups all mobilized for the recent fires and flooding that occurred across the state.
One of the privileges of being a license ham operator is that we can provide our services as needed. However to do so, some training and understanding of the protocols used for efficient communication is needed. We at Land Ops utilizes some of these such as Net Controls during our Ops activities. However there is a lot of training available for those Ham operators who wish to get involved with ARES and the other volunteer radio service groups.
On Saturday, January 26, 2019, there is a Basics Camp Training which will take place at the American Red Cross facility in Santa Ana from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
If you have an interest in attending, please contact Jeff Mikoleit with the Red Cross at jeff.mikoleit@redcross.org. Seating is limited so you should sign up right away if interested. Here is the Flier for the training event Orange-Section-ARES-BASICS-CAMP-Flyer-2019.01.26-v1.pdf
