I am using a Yaesu FT-891 for a radio. For antennas you can go cheap and use a coil that you have to get out and manually move the alligator clip or get a screwdriver antenna.

In my opinion there are 3 good manufacturers, Tarheel, Scorpion, and Hi-Q.

Awesome, thanks for this info. I will look into the Yaesu FT-891 seems reasonably priced meaning I can probably afford it.

ok Rick, I got my eye and budget on the FT 891, but I need to stay basic for the antenna like you suggested.

Can you suggest an antenna model number that has the feature you mentioned (clip). I can always add a coil later right?

Wolf River Coil, Big Stick Coil, or an ATAS-120.

I have all 3 if you want to try or buy.

Rick what do you think of the 6-40 MOTO SS by Alpha Antenna and CHA V2L from Chamelemon?

I don't know much about either of those 2 but you want as big of a coil as practical and also the coil would be better half way up the mast.

If you don't mind changing antennas then ham sticks are real cheap.

The Ham Stick looks nice, definitely a price I can start playing around with HF mobile.  Thanks

Yes, Rick Bean I'm interested in trying and buying.

I'll buy one from you. I'm heading over to HRO now for the radio FT-891 looks like my choice. I'll talk to them and see what else they have, but I"m leaning toward your recommendation.

I looking to get this HF show on the road... and anxious to start scheduling HF recons at least 3-4 before the end of the year. Are you with my brotha?

ok I picked up the Yaesu FT 891 today at HRO.

I also ordered an MFJ 9391 antenna tuner (it fit in the budget). That should be in by Tuesday.

W8KO let me know when we might be able to connect to look at your available mobile antennas.
