If you're going on the recon we can do a dress rehearsal then. I imagine we can set up a few actual mesh stations at actual locations in Death Valley.

I guess I am going to try and figure this out.  I just purchased a WRT54GS brand new in the box.  Total cost with tax was $3.17 from my local Salvation Army.  I guess I need to start watching videos and figure this all out.  Any tips will be appreciated.  I plan on attending the Search and Rescue Op so hopefully I will be up and running by then.

Jeff, did they have any more Linksys boxes there? Perhaps we should all have another field day workshop at a park to connect the mesh and test things out.

There was one more there but I did not check the model because they wanted $15 for that one. I will go back and check it.  If it one of the correct models I will pick it up too.  I think it will be 30% off so it should still be relatively cheap.

I went back today and it was gone.  I will keep looking around for another one.

Jeff, thanks for the effort. I really appreciate it. No worries. I'll pick one or two up where I can. Getting ready for the Nov 8th and 22nd ops.

Ok, I updated the firmware and followed all the steps.  I guess I have a mesh node now although I still don't know what I am supposed to do with it.  I will bring it to the Op in case you want to use it Chris.  If I can't do anything with it I will donate it to you and the group.  I have a basic understanding of how this works so I am guessing you want to use them to relay video etc around the area of the op.  Let me know what I should do next.

Jeff, I don't think you can really check it unless you have a second device. Bring it along and we'll connect it up, test it and deploy for the Death Valley SAR op.

On the Broadband-Hamnet.org web site, I saw an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) application.

    http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/applications-for-the-mesh/118-internet-relay-chat-irc.html

Although I don't have time to set up an IRC server on a WRT54 node, I do have an IRC server running on my laptop. I assume we will have a mesh node in net control. I could setup the laptop and connect it to the mesh network via ethernet, but I need 110vac because the battery on my laptop is old and will only last about an hour. Once we have the IRC server on the mesh, then the operators will need an IRC client in order to send and receive chat messages. IRC clients are readily available on the web; some are freeware, some are shareware, and some are commercial products. If the client software is installed on a laptop, we can use an ethernet cable to connect to the mesh. If it is on a smartphone or a tablet, we would need a wi-fi hotspot in order to connect to the mesh. I believe I can setup another laptop to be a mobile wi-fi hotspot that's connected to the mesh node in my Jeep and under Part 97, non-hams could use the network if they are under the control of a licensed ham.

    1. Will we have 110v power in net control?

    2. Should we encourage all operators to load IRC client software on their laptops, smartphones and tablets?
