Dual-Base Operation (twice the fun)
Broadwell / Cuddeback
Saturday November 23rd, 2019

Op Overview: This is another unique Land Ops exercise that involves two separate teams in two separate regions with two separate net control stations performing a synchronized nav-comm op. The two basecamps will be established approximately 60-80 miles apart. Each participant will be preassigned to a team and location prior to the op.

BASE #1 -The Broadwell Base – Basecamp will be setup near Broadwell dry lake or perhaps slightly north of Broadwell. Either way the base will be known as the “Broadwell Base” and the group will be Team Bravo.  Tentative Primary Base Camp location at 34.856874,-116.214457.

BASE #2 -The Cuddeback Base Basecamp will be setup near Cuddeback dry lake near the southern end.  Tentative Base Camp location at 35.212386,-117.401828.  Waypoint coordinates to the Base Camp will be sent prior to the trip. The base will be known as the “Cuddeback Base” and the group will be Team Charley.

Basecamp Notice: Both basecamps are rough camping. Please provide your own toiletry plans.

Attendance Goal
Ideal team size is 6-10 operators per location (3-5 vehicles per team) and 2-3 members at net control.

  • Broadwell total operators       =            7-12 participants ideal
  • Cuddeback total operators     =            7-12 participants ideal
  • Total Operators                       =            14-24 participants

Op Schedule:

  • THURSDAY: Early arrivals - designated operator or setup team will determine exact basecamp location for each camp. Camp overnight.
  • FRIDAY: Designated setup team deploys instruction caches according to dual-base deployment procedure. Camp overnight.
  • SATURDAY:
  • 9:00 AM – Announced HF net check-ins to two stations.

  • 4:00 PM – Op review at net control
  • 5:00 PM – Dinner at camps
Dinner time is a great time to visit other members at their camps
    Prepare your own dinners

  • 10:00 PM – Quiet camp (whatever you are doing at 10PM be quiet)

Who Should Attend (all experience levels)
This is an excellent opportunity for members of all experience levels (new and veteran) to join together for a unique adventure. This is a level 2 nav-comm exercise with a level 3 communication team project.

Vehicle Communications
Vehicle to vehicle comms will be 2 meter for hams and/or FRS for non-hams.
2 meter primary frequency = 145.555 MHz
FRS = channel 1 (no privacy code)

Net Control Communications

  • VHF/UHF - Vehicles will communicate with net control on 2 meter and/or UHF depending upon crossband repeater setups.
  • HF – net control stations are intentionally positioned to create a condition requiring NVIS. The two bases will communicate either by HF voice and/or data.
  • APRS – if operator and equipment available.

Communication Overview

  • Teams will conduct their own 3 cache op in their respective regions
  • Instruction caches will require team to team communication via:
  • RELAY: Broadwell team VHF to BASE #1 to BASE #2 to Cuddeback team VHF
  • If mobile HF operators are present then mobile HF testing will be attempted.

Communication Objectives (unique to this op)

  • Avoid VHF and/or HF ground wave conditions between two camps.
  • Create NVIS conditions between two net control stations.
  • Conduct two concurrent/synchronized ops in preparation for state to state dual operation procedure planning.
